Prerequisites

The ITIL foundation certifications do not have any prerequisite. For advanced level certifications, the foundation level certification is the prerequisite. Few years of work experience is also required for advanced level certifications. Eight years of experience is required for individuals wanting to go for the Master level ITIL certification. ITIL training is extremely helpful for advanced level certifications.

Examination Overview

The ITIL certification is available in four levels, starting from the basic and slowly advancing towards higher levels. The foundation level certification covers the basic concepts and terminologies of ITIL framework. The intermediate level certification has two modules: the Lifecycle Module and the Capability Module. The Lifecycle module includes the five major areas of Service Design, Service Operation, Service Transition, Service Strategy and Regular Service Improvement. The Capability module includes planning, optimization and protection, agreements and service offerings, control, release and validation, and operational analysis and support. The ITIL expert level certification is attained by summing up credits from the previous two levels. A total of 22 credits are needed for the expert level ITIL certification. Two of these credits should be from the foundation level, and five credits should be from ‘Managing across the Lifecycle’ module. The subject areas chosen must be balanced so that all aspects of ITIL Service Management process are covered. The ITIL master level certification is called the ITSM certification. This certification requires candidates to complete ITIL expert level certification and also prove their experience with the help of an evaluation scheme. The topics covered in the ITIL master level certification are: ability to manage organizational and cultural change, coping with industry change, regular enhancement of ITSM capability, making organization fit for audit and getting trained to become an ITIL trainer or consultant.

There are many training institutions which provide ITIL foundation training, ITIL intermediate training, and ITIL expert training. For ITIL version 3 exams, ITIL v3 training is also available. ITIL certification training programs can be very valuable for good exam preparation. The ITIL v3 foundation training program provides the entire syllabus of the foundation level certification. As individuals from various disciplines appear in the ITIL foundation level exam, ITIL v3 foundation training will give them a strong foothold. ITIL training courses consist of practice exercises, practice exams, video tutorials, etc. ITIL online training is also offered by many institutions.

Validity of certification

The ITIL certification has no validation period.
